Why I despise girls who shun poetry recitals

My lady friends, I am sorry if this offends you but it is the truth. And I thought the earlier I speak about it the better for the friendship we share. You all know friendship is about openness. I am trying to be open about my convictions here so that we can share a more fulfilling relationship henceforth. I hope you all know that relationships are about taking the time to know one another’s needs, and going on to satisfy those particular needs.

But you can never know one another’s needs if in your dealings with one another you never take time to engage in open communication. That explains the reason why I have been hurting all this long. I thought my friends would automatically know that being a poet, one of my greatest needs is for a girl who partly shares in my passion or at least who pretends to be interested in this poetry stuff that I love so much.  I was mistaken. Actually for all the time I have been a poet and invited a friend to a poetry event, 90% of the time the girls have turned down my invitations.

However, when I shared my concern with the boys, they were like, which kind of girls do you deal with? Well, to them it seemed like I was dealing with some village belles who could not tell how cool it is to go for poetry recitals but which I doubt is the case. Every time I think about this I feel like crying, I feel like cutting off all connections from those girls but as a writer I realized I could console myself by writing an article about it. I also decided to communicate my needs such that those girls would know. May be next time I invite them for a poetry recital, they will actually turn up.

The other weakness I have is I keep imagining that poetry is the most beautiful form of intellectual engagement. There is no other form of performance entertainment that engages the intellect as much as poetry does. In fact poetry is for intelligent people or so I imagine. That is why I do not complain sometimes. We all cannot be sharp enough to comprehend or even find interest in the way poets weave words to create abstract meanings out of seemingly pointless verses. That would be forcing everyone to be clever which would make me a dictator of sorts. Not all of us can concentrate to follow through a poet throwing words all over like he owns them in the name of reciting a poem. He is intelligent and you are not. Just right there, is the big difference between the two of you and it is understandable.

  1. This
journey I embarked on, has taken turns that even I had no say in. Did I
sneer when you wouldn't share in my whims over Queen and Lungile's tart
dance, or did you write me off as one of those Maria Clara fans?
The point I seek to drive home, akin to a dagger through the soft yet
boned back of an unsuspecting lover, is... Despise not, because I've
    despised you not.
